Cover licenses

Cover the song.
Release it cleared.

A cover is your recording of a song somebody else wrote, and that needs a cover license before a store will carry it. We route the licensing through Easy Song, our licensing partner, and the finished track goes out through Unchained.

The license

What is a cover license?

Permission from the song's writer to release your recording of their song. You need one before a store will carry your cover.

A song somebody else wrote A cover you recorded and are sending to stores. License needed
A song you wrote Your own work, start to finish. Nothing to clear
A cover released as video Video runs on a sync license instead. Different permission

Licenses are counted per song, so an EP carrying three covers needs three. The formal name is a mechanical license, and Easy Song arranges it.

Common questions

What artists ask about covers.

The four that come up before a cover goes out.

When do I need a cover license?

Any time you distribute a recording of a song you did not write. If the song is your own, there is nothing to clear here and you can go straight to distribution.

What does the license cover?

The audio recording you send to stores. That is the mechanical side of it. Putting the cover out as a video needs a separate sync license, and that is not part of this flow.

What about remixes?

A remix is a different thing. It uses somebody else's original recording, so it needs permission from whoever owns that master rather than a mechanical license for the composition. This page is about re-recording a song yourself.

How do I get one?

Through Easy Song, our licensing partner. Once the song is cleared, upload the cover in your Unchained account and release it the same way as any other track.

Clear the song, then release it.

Start the license with Easy Song. Once it is cleared, your cover goes out through Unchained like any other track.
